GENERAL ELECTION INFORMATION
The Montebello City Council is composed of five members. On May 11, 2022, the City Council adopted a City Council district map, creating a total of five (5) electoral districts within the City. Municipal elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even numbered years, with three Councilmembers selected at one election and two at the next. For the November 2022 municipal election, all five (5) City Council District seats will be placed on the ballot. Council seats for Districts 2 and 4 will be placed on the ballot for a 2-year term and Council seats for Districts 1, 3, and 5 will be placed on the ballot for a 4-year term. Councilmembers are elected only by the registered voters of their own district and must reside in that district.
The City Treasurer seat will also be placed on the ballot for the November 2022 municipal election, for a full term of four years.
The City of Montebello consolidates its elections with LA County. Voting information including voter registration status can be found on the Election Information page on the LA County Registrar-Recorder website.
LA County uses Vote Center instead of precinct polling places. Voters can cast a ballot in-person at ANY Vote Center in the County up to 10 days earlier than Election Day in some locations.
California Assembly Bill 37 now requires all registered voters receive a vote by mail ballot. You may return your ballot by mail, to any vote by mail ballot drop box, or at any Vote Center. Vote by Mail information.
Voter Registration Requirements
To be eligible to vote in an election, you must register in your District at least 15 days prior to the election date. Once you have registered, your voter registration will remain active, regardless of whether or not you voted in the last election.
- You must be a U.S. citizen at the time you register.
- You must be at least 18 years of age before the date of the next election.
- You must not be found mentally incompetent by a court of law.
- You may not be in prison or on parole for a felony conviction.
You must Re-register if:
- Permanently moved to a different address
- Changed your name
- Changed your signature
- Changed your Political Party Affiliation
If you have not updated your signature for over ten years, it is highly recommended to re-register and update your signature. You may register online at here. Voter registrations are maintained and filed with the County Registrar. You may mail your completed form directly to the County Registrar.
Voter Election Information
Registered voters may vote up to 29 days (Starting October 5th) before Election Day during business hours at the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk Office at 12400 Imperial Highway, Norwalk, CA 90650 in Room 3002.

If you would like to become a candidate for local office, you may file a Candidate Intention Statement California Form 501 at any time prior to the close of the nomination period. The original form must be filed in the City Clerk's Office.
The 2022 filing period for nomination papers and candidate's statements is Monday, July 18 through Friday, August 12, 2022. The City Clerk’s office will be open for Candidate filing Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We will be closed every Friday, with the exception of Friday, August 12, 2022, we will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Candidate filing Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance, by calling (323) 887-1367 or (323) 887-1359 to obtain your nomination papers and to file them. Appointments are highly recommended to ensure ample time to thoroughly review the filing requirements and answer any questions. Please note, that nomination papers must be hand delivered to City Clerk staff. Anything submitted outside the aforementioned hours will not be accepted.

Candidate Handbook & Fees
The Sample Candidate Handbook is available below in electronic format at no cost, and a fillable version will be provided to those that will pull nomination papers for the upcoming election via a flash drive. There is a fee of $25 to file your official nomination papers and a fee to file a Candidate Statement, if the candidate chooses to do so. Please note that the Candidate Statement fee is determined by the County of Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk.
